There's a common mistake in list building…
Limiting your list-building activities to one or two tactics… and depriving people who encounter you and your business the opportunity to join your list where and when they find you.
Have you created, set up or installed all of the following?
If not—if there’s even one of these basics that you’ve missed—go do them right now!
Ready?
Here’s the list of absolute basics to make sure you’ve taken care of:
- A professional autoresponder subscription
- Your landing page and opt-in box
- Your website pop-up opt-in
- Your sign-up incentive (what you give away in exchange for their email address)
- A basic welcome email series for those who sign up
- Your Facebook Page signup tab
- Your Twitter pinned post
- Your email signature
- Your author bio/resource box
Okay, so what does each of these look like? Let’s go through them.
A Professional Autoresponder Subscription
Sign up with a reliable, fully-featured autoresponder. Whatever service you choose, make sure your service has professional features such as templates and web forms you can customize—as well as the ability to:
- Import lists
- Some platforms are very protective of their delivery rate, so they prevent lists from being imported in an effort to maintain a high quality. This isn't the only way to ensure high deliverability, though – so don't
- Split lists into segments
- As you grow your list, you'll likely have subscribers with various interests and buying history with you. The ability to segment your list allows you to communicate with each group separately.
- Provide you with as-your-list-grows pricing options
- This will allow you to start out at an affordable price, and only need to spend more as your list grows (and starts making you more money).
When it comes to managing your list, don’t mess around. Get the best autoresponder for the job.
You can find a list of top recommended autoresponders that fit all of the above requirements inside our Profit Planner, “How to Get More Subscribers.”
Your Landing Page and Opt-in Box
Many people make the mistake of putting their web form for sign-up on their Home Page or in the sidebar of their WordPress site.
Of course it’s good to have a sign-up in your side bar for those who drop in by accident—but for everyone else, make sure you have a separate, dedicated, focused landing page, so you have a place to direct traffic from just about anywhere!
For example, while we've used an opt-in from here on this page, we've also linked our landing page in several places – both here as well as on external pages and sites.
So make sure you have a separate landing page… and if you must use your Home page as your landing page, make sure it looks and behaves like a landing page with a clear offer and call-to-action (and few distractions or options to do anything else).
Your Website Pop-Up Opt-in
Just like a landing page, a pop-up works best when it offers an immediate, irresistible incentive.
But this only works when it's displayed in the right – and relevant – context.
That means showing the pop-up when your site visitor is consuming content and thinking about the very subject your pop-up addresses.
For example, if your blog post is explaining a concept, you might offer a free download that goes into more depth on how to take that concept and put it into practice.
This is often described as a “content upgrade,” and it's exactly what we're doing on this page by teaching you a few concepts and then offering you access to our complete “How to Get More Subscribers” Profit Planner from MyNAMS…

Off-Site and Other Email Capturing Opportunities
Don't forget that you can spread your list-building far beyond the virtual walls of your blog or website.
Consider placing links to landing pages in social media posts, on your Facebook page (you can use both the button as well as your page cover image to drive traffic to your landing page, Twitter pinned tweets (at the top of your profile), YouTube channel welcome videos and headers, etc.
There are so many places to capture subscribers – and you'll find many more detailed inside our “How to Get More Subscribers” Profit Planner from MyNAMS.
