Most coaches, trainers, and consultants are stuck in rut. They're constantly working to keep the client pipeline filled. But there's a problem, because nearly all of those clients pay them hourly.
It's not an ideal business model.
But, if you find yourself in this situation in your own business, you have the choice to do something about it. There's nothing wrong with trading time for money, but if that's the only income source in your business, you've basically bought yourself a job. So how do you fix this?
One of the easiest and most effective ways to start bringing in an additional line of income (or more than one) is through digital products.
You, after all, are an expert. But if you limit the knowledge you share to a small group of clients, how can you possibly realize a larger income? That's the beauty of digital products.
“But wait,” you may be saying… “Aren't digital products expensive and technically involved? I'm going to have to hire people to do this for me, right?”
Sure, you could, but you don't need to. Most people overcomplicate the process, and spend far too much time, energy, and money on software and tools they just don't need. If you're determined to get going with digital products, but have been held back because of technology, there are simple solutions out on the market to help you easily move past those concerns.
But there are still some hurdles you might encounter in creating your digital products. These hurdles are more like mistakes – some of the most typical ones most digital product creators encounter when they first get started. But our mission here is to avoid those mistakes.
Coaches and trainers who are eager to start generating passive income, find digital products just the solution they are after… but typically end up making one or more of the following mistakes:
> Not listening to their market to find out what they want
> Trying to perfect their product before releasing it
> Cramming too much information into one single product
If any of these digital product creation mistakes are stopping you (or have derailed you in the past), then here's how to get past each of them fast.
MISTAKE #1: Not listening to their market to find out what they want
As product creators, we often think we are the expert. And that may be true when it comes to our subject matter. But we're usually not as much an expert at knowing what our prospective customers are thinking. That's one of the biggest reasons so many products fail to sell.
But there's good news. This is a mistake that can be avoided. In fact, it doesn't take much to turn things around. All that's needed here is a bit of research. Knowing what the market wants from you is vital if you want your digital products to actually sell.
So how do you do this? Simple: Go to where your prospects are and listen to what they’re asking. You can find them on social media, in forums, and on your competitor’s blogs. What are they talking about in these places? What are their questions? What are their complains? The more patterns you find, the better you can become at delivering exactly what they want in your digital products.
MISTAKE #2: Trying to perfect their product before it gets released
This is a huge mistake that far too many of us make. Especially those of us who are true perfectionists. But there's one big problem – your digital product will never be perfect. And if that's the case (which is probably is) then it's destined to never see the light of day.
But here's a little secret: most customers aren't seeking a perfect product, they are looking for a solution to their problem. And the vast majority of them will be incredibly forgiving of you for delivering a digital product that isn't up to your eating standards. In fact, they probably won't even notice there's anything wrong. Not as long as you deliver on the promise of helping them solve whatever they came to you to solve.
Don't try to be perfect. Just get your product done. (Heck, it's a digital product… you can always change it later.)
MISTAKE #3: Cramming too much information into one single product
Want to know what products are the most successful? The one which customers complete… and which solve their problems. And the best way to do that is to address one problem at a time. Do any more than that and you're customer will likely get overwhelmed and stop making their way through your product.
That means you've failed to help them get what they want… and probably have lost out on a great testimonial which you could have turned into more customers.
Don't feel like you need to cram anything and everything you know into your products. Just carefully edit your content to the essentials. This is one case where “less” absolutely is “more.”
