Don’t quite know what you should be doing on social media to get the prospects and clients you are after? These 5 laws can be a great place to start, so you can put your own effective social marketing plan of action together. Just follow the law…
Law #1 Be a good listener
Being successful with your content and social media marketing takes a certain amount of discipline to listen to others. Who are you going to listen to? You prospective audience, that’s who. Why do you need to listen? Because when you do, you will discover what’s important to the people you’re trying to sell something to, and you can more easily enter into the conversation they are already engaged in… and creating great content that adds value rather than clutter to their lives.
Law #2 Stay focused
Personal social media content and business content are not the same. When you are representing a brand, product, or service on social media, it’s important to stay on message. That doesn't mean your message needs to be about you all the time. In fact, it really should be. But it does mean you need to keep your discussion focused on your one ideal audience, and not try to reach different audiences simultaneously. Broad content strategies that aim to be all things to all people, simply don’t work.
Law #3 Quality matters
Quality trumps quantity every time. If you think a Facebook Fan Page of 100,000 disengaged “fans” is better than a page with 487 hyperengaged “fans,” you’d better pay attention to this law. Numbers don’t matter if it means there is no quality behind those numbers.
Law #4 Be patient
The internet age means that things happen faster than they used to. But developing a dedicated social media following takes time. It is, after all, still people connecting with other people, and it takes time to build any relationship, offline or online. So don’t give up on building your social media relationships. The moment you do will likely be the moment just before it was about to pay off.
Law #5 Leverage the social aspect of social media
If you create amazing, high quality content, and have an audience who appreciates your work, they are far more likely to share it with their own audiences on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, their blogs, and elsewhere. So don’t miss out on the opportunity to encourage social sharing.
Bonus Law: You don’t need to be a social media expert…
But it helps to know the laws, and have some handy tools and systems in place to maximize your social media efforts. So don’t be afraid to accept some help and guidance.
