5 Social Media Marketing Myths That Just Are Not True

Every sujet has its own set of myths, and social media marketing is no different. But as entrepreneurs, business owners, and marketers, it’s crucial that we all know the truth, so we can prosper from the many opportunities that these online platforms can offer… without fear.

So, let’s get started debunking these 5 major social media marketing myths:

Myth #1 Google+ Is Useless

In early 2015, Google+ as we knew it, was official retired (or, rather, it was split into “streams” and “photos,”), but the power of Google should not be underestimated. This content, regardless of what Google decides to call their platform now, is on a Googleowned network, so it gets Google love. Period. End of story (and myth).

Myth #2 You Can’t Get Leads From Social Media

Not only is this false, but sites like Facebook and Twitter have invested considerable amounts of money and staff to help marketers set up lead generation funnels from their platforms. And, for many businesses, social media represents their top source of high quality, targeted traffic.

Myth #3 Only The Rich and Famous Have Huge Numbers Of Followers

Maybe this was true at the dawn of social media, but these days, followers congregate around thought leaders and those who share great content. You simply need to provide content that people want to consume and share with others. It’s as simple as that.

Myth #4 Social Media Is Perfect For Promotions

Get this idea out of your mind right now. If you think about your own social media consumption, chances are you probably avoid clicking on anything that looks blatantly promotional. Those kinds of posts do well at reducing the ranks of your followers, because, well, they aren't following you to see what you are going to sell them next… they are following you to see how you’ll be sharing or entertaining them. Promotions are acceptable on social media, but only after you've gained the right.

Myth #5 You Should Use All Platforms Available

There are several social media networking sites to choose from. Each of these platforms has a decent amount of users. However, using all of may not be the best strategy. Not all sites are appropriate for your business. You need to find a couple of platforms that you think will help your company thrive and pursue followers on them actively.

Bonus Myth Debunked You Can Do It All On Your Own

Striking the right balance on social media is certainly possible, but with all the other responsibilities you have in running your business, why put yourself in the position of having to do it all yourself? Your job is to work on your business… not in it. And social media requires attention to detail that can easily distract or preoccupy you from other important tasks. That’s why you should consider leveraging the expertise of a professional, like the folks over at Likeable Local, who can do the heavy listing for you.
