Digital products are easily the most effective way to reach more clients in your business without adding a ton more time to your schedule. They also are great for bringing in new channels of income. Lots of coaches and trainers out there have recognized these facts, but they still have questions about creating and bringing their digital products to life.
In this article, let's look at three very common questions I encounter all the time – and some of the answers I give.
Question #1: What type of product will people buy?
Glad you asked. In fact, this is a question that isn't asked enough. Most product creators focus on making things they ‘think' the market wants. The only problem is, they're usually wrong. And that means no sales or slow sales.
But there's a trick to finding out what type of products people will actually buy. Are you ready for this? You need to ask them.
If you already have customers, brainstorm some ideas you think they'd like you to cover in a product… and then survey them about what they want most.
If you don't have enough people to survey, see what people are saying online. You can look at forums, social media groups, and elsewhere. It's called research, and it's something I cover in details for VIP members of DIY Digital.
The bottom line here is that the more you know about your ideal client, the better you can deliver the things they want. Don't guess. Do your homework first. It will be far more profitable for you.
Question #2: How much should the product cost?
You'll probably be annoyed by the answer here, but the price should be what your client is willing to pay. Price is another thing you can do research on. Check out the competition (also something I cover in my DIY Digital VIP training) and see what they are offering and what they are charging for it.
But be careful about how you look at this. People aren't paying for an ebook or an mp3 file, they are paying for the results they will get after they've used your product. So be sure you are comparing apples to apples when you do your research. Look at what the competition is promising to deliver once someone have completed their course, book, or program. It's not about the number of pages or modules.
Question #3: How can I promote my product?
Product sales rarely happen when the product is promoted to a ‘cold' audience. People need to get to know, like, and trust you first. And that means getting them onto your email list or inviting them into your community… or, at the very least, providing some great educational value to them on a blog post or webinar before you ask for the sale.
So don't focus on selling. Focus on building relationships and demonstrating your authority first. Then, you still don't need to sell. You simply need to tell them you offer a solution and show them where to buy it.
