For any smart business these days, building an email list is an essential part of marketing. Not only can you communicate with your prospects and customers more effectively, but, at least in my little corner of the world (Facebook ads, that is), you can leverage your list in multiple ways using “custom audiences” and “lookalike audiences.”
Now, up until recently, most list building has been done by creating an opt-in offer or promoting a giveaway or contest in exchange for someone’s email address. The typical process includes something like this, involving a prompt to type in an email address:

But that’s changed. Now, it’s possible to actually capture leads inside various social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, through the use of one-click opt-ins that allow users to grant permission to have their authenticated email address shared with your business.
Here’s an example of how I use this inside Facebook, using an app from 22 Social:

And, through the use of Tweet Cards on Twitter, you can do pretty much the same thing:
